Want to impress on the first date?
Take your lucky boy or girl night on a town to SamcheungDong. A quaint little neighborhood with full of characters and rhythm and funk to boot! Located just North of heart and seoul of central district, near City Hall. Start out the night at one of the cuttest restaurants in town, a French restaurant MIDI which specializes in seafood cuisines. The menu is arranged in a set course. I highly recommend the seafood bouillabaisse set. It starts out with fresh oysters. They are more than plentful. Then follow by the main course - bouillabaisse and ending with a perfect dessert and coffee or tea. The set cost about 70,000 for two (if house wine included, 88,000won and plus tax. Further info:
. A Midi has only three tables. Reservation is required. (02) 736-8667 or
(02)736-1048.
After the wonderful meal, head over to a quaint jazz bar, Jazz Story. On a starry night, it makes a romantic, leisurely stroll. but if your date is in stilettos, I recommend you flag down a cab. The walk talkes about 15 minutes. Head North and walk straight ahead. as the road splits into a Y, stay to your right. Walk another 5-7 minutes. Start looking for the sign on your right. You’ll see smaller green neighborhood buses parked front of a large gated home. The bar is located directly across.
The bar specializes in live music. but unlike others, the muscians are arranged in the center and the patrons are seated around them. The chairs possesse your grandmother’s antiquity comfort; ripping apart yet duked taped together to savior the last remaining days. The songs are more in the styles of contemporary, classic rock to pop sang in jazzy styles ranging from The Police, Joan Jett and the Black Hearts, Men at Work to Dizzy Gilespie. The musicians are seoulful with a twist of funk.
A warning: On a weekend night, the place gets packed. Come early as 7:30. or come after 9:30 when the crowd thins out. It closes at midnight. there is no cover charge, but the drink prices are stiffer than your stiffest drink. A heineken costs 8,000 won and cass 6,000 won. A Long Island Ice Tea about 12,000won.
Location: Reminder: there is no direct subway line connecting to Samcheungdong. The best options are:
1. Get off at Ghwanghwamun (Purple, line 5) and Exit 3 or 2. Take a taxi and tell the driver “samcheungdong ka ju say yo”. Drive straight ahead and at the deadend intersection, will turn right. at the first left, turn into Samcheungdonggil Street. After about 2-3 minutes, get off the taxi and start walking straight ahead til you see Midi on your right.
OR
2. Get off at Anguk (Organge, line 3) Exit 1. Catch a cab and tell the driver “Samcheungdong ka ju say yo”. Pass 2 streets. turn right on the third street, Samcheungdonggil. Then follow the same direction as above.
