Check out the great quaint Winebar/resataurant in Samcheungdong, Seoul.  I have never eaten at the restaurant so i can’t fairly assess the restaurant quality on food/ambiance but I would highly recommend the winebar.  It’s dimly lit with the candles and interesting lighting artworks.  The wine menu is extensive but they are a bit overpriced.  But a great place to chill with a group of friends.  Mostly made up with the Korean customers, but the waitstaff speak English. The downside is that it closes at 2am and stops serving alcohol at 1.

Location: SamcheongDong.  Suway: Purple line Gwanghamune Exit 2 or 3 on the same side as Kyobo Book Store. Take a taxi: “Samcheong Dong”.  Taxi heading north and turn right at the deadend.  Turn left at the first street.

APE WITH PIPE

map_new.jpg

Mediterrean style homecooked affair.  The meals are hearty and it’s a great place to gather with your loved ones and friends.  The same owners as the Buddah Belly Restaurant.

I recommend the chicken kabobs with risotto (rice).

Direction:  Noksapyeong Station Exit 1.  Take the bridge to across the street.  Turn right and walk up along the ramp towards The Aussie Shop.  It’s  across from New Delhi Restaurant.  Ape with Pipe is on your right.

I had the opportunity to meet the owner/chef, Jane, through a mutual friend.  She truely loves her job/food which is reflected in her cooking and cusines.   Don’t miss out on the dining experience listed below.  Jane is a Korean-American and she understands the foreigners’ palettes and their cravings for an authentic North American home cook meals.

Toque Diner Christmas Dinner

Dear Toque Friends,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
I know it’s a little early to be saying this but you know time flies and Christmas will be here sooner than you thought.
End of the year is a busy time, especially in Korea, for many of you but I hope you have a chance to relax a bit and spend time with your loved ones.
I know many of you will be leaving Seoul for the holidays, but for those of you who will be around Toque will be having 2 events to celebrate Christmas.

1. Christmas Eve 6 Course Dinner(December 24, Monday) \40,000 (VAT included)

I will be preparing a gourmet 6 course dinner that includes a seafood course, chicken course, steak course and other dishes that you could never have anywhere else. We also will be serving a glass of red or white wine with the dinner. Reservation times are 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

2. Christmas Turkey Brunch(December 25, Tuesday) \35,000 (VAT included)

For those of you who missed out on our Thanksgiving Turkey Buffet, you have another chance to come and enjoy moist, juicy turkey. We’ll be preparing all-u-can-eat turkey, mashed potato, cranberry sauce, quiche, french toast, dessert and much more. Brunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Reservations fill up quite fast so I recommend that you call in ASAP.

December always makes me sentimental and always reminds me of the times when I couldn’t be with my family.
I hope everyone can spend some time with your family and loved ones but if you can’t, I wish that Toque could be your “family” in Seoul.

I hope for many new memories to be made with your family and relatives this December.
Thank you and Happy Holidays!!

Jane

The final movie for the EKF Cine-Cafe year is the English-language documentary on the plight of Korean women forced into sexual slavary during the Japanese colonial period (also known as “Comfort Women”) “Behind Forgotten Eyes” by American film maker Anthony Gilmore. The movie has won several international prizes for best film and best documentary and the EKF screening will be the first sneak preview of the movie in Korea. The screening will be preceeded by an introductory short film of the work-in-progress “Resilience,” a documentary on Korean birth mothers. Ms. Tammy Chu, direcotor and co-producer of “Resilience” and Editor of “Behind Forgotten Eyes” will join the screening to lead the discussion on both topics and to answer your questions about the art of movie making. The morning screening is on Wednesday, Dec 12. As usual, the group will get together at 9:30am at the French Cultural Center and the movie will start at 10am. The evening screening is on Thursday, Dec 20. The evening screening will take place at the BBB Cafe, located on the 4th floor of Hannam Building in Itaewon (same building as the International Clinic). Participants will start gathering from 6:30pm and the movie will begin at 7pm.
